How to Prevent Hantavirus: Your Complete Protection Guide
There is no hantavirus vaccine licensed anywhere in the Americas or Europe. Prevention depends entirely on avoiding contact with infected wild rodents and their excreta. The good news: most infections are preventable with the right knowledge and a modest set of products.
Step 1: Rodent-Proof Your Home
Preventing rodent entry is the most effective long-term strategy. Rodents can squeeze through any gap larger than ¼ inch. A single mouse can enter through a hole the size of a dime.
Seal All Entry Points
- Inspect the exterior for gaps around pipes, conduits, cables, and vents
- Seal gaps ¼ inch or larger in walls, foundations, and around pipes
- Use hardware cloth (¼ inch mesh) or steel wool for openings — rodents cannot chew through these materials
- Install door sweeps on garage and exterior doors
- Cap chimneys with fine mesh
- Check for gaps where utility lines enter the building
Remove Attractants
- Store food (including pet food and birdseed) in airtight metal or hard plastic containers
- Keep rubbish bins tightly lidded — use rodent-proof bins outdoors
- Remove woodpiles, debris piles, and clutter from near the house exterior
- Keep grass and vegetation trimmed near the foundation
- Set snap traps (not glue traps) in garages, sheds, and crawl spaces
Electronic & Ultrasonic Deterrents
Ultrasonic pest repellers emit high-frequency sound waves that rodents find irritating. While their effectiveness varies and they should not replace physical exclusion, they can supplement a rodent-proofing strategy — particularly for garages, attics, and outbuildings.
Step 2: Safe Cleanup Protocol
The CDC's rodent cleanup guidance specifically warns against sweeping or vacuuming droppings, urine, or nesting materials, as this aerosolizes virus particles directly into the breathing zone. The CDC-recommended wet-cleaning protocol is as follows — CDC cleanup guidance:
- Ventilate first. Open all windows and doors. Air out the space for at least 30 minutes before entering. Do not use a fan (recirculates particles).
- Put on PPE before entering. Wear rubber or nitrile gloves and a minimum N95 respirator (N100 provides even better protection). Add a disposable coverall if droppings are extensive.
- Wet-spray all affected areas. Thoroughly soak droppings, urine, and nesting material with a bleach solution — CDC's recipe is 1.5 cups of household bleach in 1 gallon of water, that is 1 part bleach to 9 parts water — or with an EPA-registered disinfectant. Do NOT spray dry — use a spray bottle to wet before touching.
- Let it sit at least 5 minutes. This contact time is required to inactivate the virus.
- Wipe up with paper towels. Pick up wetted material directly into a sealable plastic bag. Never re-dry the area before cleanup is complete.
- Disinfect the entire area. Mop floors with disinfectant. Wipe down surfaces. Steam-clean soft furnishings or clothing that may be contaminated.
- Double-bag all waste. Seal contaminated materials in two plastic bags before disposal.
- Remove PPE safely. Remove gloves by turning them inside out. Do not touch the outside of the gloves with bare hands. Wash hands for 20+ seconds.
What Disinfectant Kills Hantavirus — and What CDC Actually Specifies
CDC's cleanup page gives two acceptable options and one recipe. The options are "a general-purpose household disinfectant cleaning product" — CDC adds, usefully, "confirm the word 'disinfectant' is included on the label" — or a bleach solution. The recipe is exact: 1.5 cups of household bleach in 1 gallon of water, or 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, made fresh before use. Contact time is five minutes, or whatever the disinfectant's own label specifies.

Why 1:9 and not something stronger: a 1:9 dilution of standard 5–6% household bleach gives roughly 0.5–0.6% sodium hypochlorite, which is the concentration used across CDC's environmental-disinfection guidance for body-fluid spills. Stronger is not better — it damages surfaces, off-gasses more, and does not shorten the required contact time.
Beyond Droppings: What CDC Says About Everything Else in the Room
The part of CDC's guidance that gets left out of most summaries is what to do with the objects, not the floor. These instructions come directly from CDC's cleanup page.

Two of these rules are worth pausing on. The three-to-six-week rule for papers and books is a waiting strategy — it is the only place in CDC's guidance that implicitly concedes a survival time, and it is far longer than most people assume. And the vehicle protocol is separate: air the car out for 20 minutes with hood, doors and trunk open, disconnect the battery before inspecting the engine bay, and check the air intake and cabin filter for nests before starting the engine.
Heavy Infestation: When N95 Is Not the Right Answer
The N95 respirator that is right for a few droppings in a kitchen is not what CDC specifies for a heavily infested or long-vacant building. For that work — and for anyone doing it as part of their job — CDC's list is: disposable coveralls, rubber boots or disposable shoe covers, rubber, latex or vinyl gloves, protective goggles, and a half-mask air-purifying (negative-pressure) respirator with a HEPA filter, or a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with HEPA filters. CDC adds two conditions that consumer guidance usually omits: local and state requirements for pulmonary-function testing and fit testing must be met before any respirator work begins, and PPE must be decontaminated when it is removed at the end of the day. Workers hired for this kind of clean-up are told to contact their state health department and their state occupational safety authority first.
Step 3: Air Quality & HEPA Filtration
After cleaning a rodent-contaminated space, residual virus particles can remain suspended in the air. Running a True HEPA air purifier in the space for several hours after cleanup can help capture any remaining particles. HEPA filters are rated to capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger — well within the range of hantavirus-laden aerosol particles.
For homes in high-risk areas or anyone who regularly works in spaces with rodent activity, HEPA air purification is one of several measures described in public health guidance on reducing indoor aerosol exposure.
Outdoor & Occupational Precautions
Camping & Hiking
- Use a tent with a solid sealed floor — never sleep directly on bare ground
- Inspect shelters and cabins for rodent signs before use; ventilate and clean before sleeping
- Store food in sealed containers and never eat in tents
- Use a camp stove rather than open fires that attract rodents with food smells
- Shake out clothing and gear that was left on the ground
Occupational Safety
CDC names two occupational groups explicitly: "people who handle and clean up after rodents, such as pest exterminators and animal caretakers, are at higher risk of hantavirus exposure and should take precautions." Its instruction for anyone doing this work as a job is to contact their local or state health department and their state occupational health and safety authority before starting, and to use the heavy-infestation PPE set — coveralls, boots or shoe covers, gloves, goggles, and a HEPA-filtered half-mask or powered respirator, with the fit-testing and pulmonary-function requirements their state imposes.
- Pest-control and remediation workers: full PPE set, not a disposable N95
- People who keep or breed pet rats: Seoul virus spread through 31 U.S. ratteries in 11 states in 2017, and 13.1% of 183 people tested in the U.S. and Canada had antibodies (CDC's MMWR, February 2018). CDC suggests asking a veterinarian about testing new rats before introducing them
- Anyone opening long-closed structures for work — seasonal property managers, utility and inspection crews — is doing the single highest-risk activity in the CDC case record

Who Actually Gets Infected
Prevention advice is easier to act on when you know which exposures produce cases. CDC's own analysis of exposure characteristics for U.S. HPS patients from 1993 to 2015 concluded that those at highest risk are "persons in occupations with potential for rodent exposure and American Indian women 40–64 years of age" (de St Maurice et al., Emerg Infect Dis 2017). CDC's cumulative registry shows 62% of cases in men and 19% in American Indian or Alaska Native patients — a group that is about 1% of the U.S. population — with a median age of 38 and a range from 5 to 88 years. CDC's clinician brief adds the setting: "cases normally occur in rural areas where forests, fields, and farms offer habitats for rodents."
The counterpart to that is seasonality. In CDC's case file, 62% of cases with a known onset month began between April and August, and May, June and July alone account for 42% (our tabulation of CDC's data).
